Commentary
“Extricate” is credited to Steve Hanley, Craig Scanlon, Adrian Sherwood (who produced), and MES.
Although “Extricate” was the title track of Extricate the album (1990), it for some reason wasn’t included on the vinyl LP format. It only appeared on the CD and cassette formats as the final bonus track. Tommy Mackay’s entry for the track in 40 Odd Years of The Fall uses adjectives such as “bland” and “plodding”. “Even the scream seems half-hearted”, he says (2018, p.118).
The lyrics don’t provide much by way of clues, but many listeners assume that the song is referring to MES and Brix’s split. Maybe it is.
In 2014, Brix formed a band called Brix and the Extricated, with fellow ex-Fall musicians Paul Hanley, Steve Hanley and Steve Trafford. They were joined by Jason Brown, formerly of Tom Hingley & The Lovers (with whom the Hanley brothers had also played).
Footnotes
- “Extricate” is sometimes treated as a synonym for “extract” – basically, to get out of a situation. But there’s a bit more to it than that. The word indicates a disentangling or unravelling. The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary defines (meaning 2) “extricate” as “get (a person) out of a difficulty, entanglement, etc.; remove, usu. with difficulty or dexterity, from what physically holds or contains someone or something.” ↩︎
